As a ceramist my body of work encapsulates the soft elements of clay by depicting the gentle nature of clay as fabric. I find inspiration from classical Greek sculptures and pottery. My work takes a twist on Hellenistic amphora shapes and is larger in scale, making the forms feel more statuesque.
My process entails throwing on the potter's wheel and hand building. I begin by wedging 10lbs of clay. The process eradicates any air bubbles in the clay. I then take the wedged clay and throw it on the wheel. I center and pull the walls of the clay as high as it can go. To reach my desired height, I have to add clay in sections. Once the previous section has stiffened, a new section is added the following day. I repeat this process around 5 times. A typical piece usually takes a total of 50-60lbs. After the form is complete, I roll clay into long coils. I scratch into the surface of the vessel and fill in space with slip (clay in liquid form). I then take the coils and lay it over the slipped surface and mold it in place. I choose to place the coils in a directional pattern to mimic the delicate nature of fabric.
The process continues with glazing patterns. Dripping patterns flow downward to direct the viewer's eye to the sculptural features, highlighting the styling of the form.
