Artist Statement
"My work balances on the thread-thin line between art and craft -- that seam line that holds our desires together rather than a space where hierarchy within expression feels necessary. Quilts are, to me, often a physical manifestation of our desire for order and repetition. My work often lives within the tension of our reach for perfection within human manual imprecision and embraces the beauty in letting go of our preconceived notions of perfection.
In the piece, All My Quiet Moments, I work with two traditional quilt forms, the paper-pieced hexagon or “hexies” and yo-yos. Both are techniques often undertaken to use up scraps, as my piece here is using my leftover neutral/white fabric bits. As life lately sees me spending non-work hours in carpool lines and my kids’ soccer and swim team practices, picking up easily transportable projects seems to be the only way to get anything done. Embarking on these time intensive pieces out of necessity within the stolen work moments of motherhood makes me feel intimately connected to the makers of these types of quilts of the past—women who have always stolen quiet moments to make something beautiful."
