Realizing the Mirror Perch Bridge at the Crosby Arboretum
This program will explore the collaborative and integrated design issues associated with the realization of the Mirror Perch Bridge at the Crosby Arboretum Gum Pond Exhibit. Professor Hans C. Herrmann, AIA, will discuss his role in leading the project development, design and realization processes of the Mirror Perch Bridge via academic coursework and volunteer organization initiatives.
Learning Objectives
- Guests will learn about the collaborative design process that considered the site's physical and historical context, restrictive/minimal budget and skill-limited design and construction workforce in a physically challenging swamp-forest site.
- A critical review of material and design choices that contribute to the structures' safety, sustainability and material efficiency.
- Outlining concepts for organizing the pro bono design and realization of structures in culturally or historically significant settings.
- Understand how the project addresses sustainability as a core value through its choice of materials, its orientation, its spatial relation to its environment
