Fashion Playlist: From Modern Music to Fashion Favorites

For over one hundred years, the modern music industry has contributed to the evolution of popular fashion trends. Changes in popular music are visible in the changes of clothing styles, especially among adolescents and teens. To visually show the close connections between fashion and music, vintage garments from the MSU Historic Costume and Textiles Collection are used to recreate looks inspired by historical movements and icons of the music industry. The looks are creative interpretations of fashions informed by music styles, such as punk and grunge rock, as well as styles worn by singers and musicians serving as inspiration for fashion designers. The exhibition Fashion Playlist demonstrates ways the diversity of accepted fashions today is linked to the variety of genres making up our favorite music playlists. Accompanying the garments, are illustrations of each look to support a creative interpretation.
